ABOUT ECT

El Campanil Childrens Theatre (ECCT) is a function of El Campanil Theatre which provides theater training, acting opportunities and stage experiences for youth, teens  and adults.

AUDITIONS

Auditions are held approximately eight weeks before each production. All roles are open and no experience is necessary to audition. Newcomers are welcomed and often given small roles as they perform in their first show. Nothing is required in order to audition, but the director will be looking for strong voices and good expression. The director will chat with the auditioner about casual things - pets, siblings, hobbies, etc. A child may be asked to do a small improv, i.e., “show me what you look & sound like when you get mad.”  It not only shows the childs creativeness, but choices they make, and their ability to follow directions.

CALL BACKS

After Auditions are over, the director reviews all audition forms, and compiles a callback list of those actors she/he would like to see again. A Callback List is posted on the El Campanil Theatre’s website (Children’s Theatre link).  If an auditioners name is on the list they are required to come to Callbacks on the assigned date & time.

At Callbacks, they will read from the script, perhaps do a short improv with another actor, and respond to some instructions given by the director.  They may be asked about the conflicts they have listed on their audition form.  The director will give information about responsibility if they are cast - keeping up schoolwork, the need to be absent on Thursday mornings when performing for the schools, etc.

CAST LISTS

After the director reviews notes from Callbacks, a cast list is created and again posted on the El Campanil Theatre website. If a child is not cast in this production, they are invited and encouraged to audition for the next show.

REHEARSALS

Rehearsals are six weeks long, from the hours of 4-5:30PM until Tech week, where rehearsal is from 4-6:00PM. Occasionally, a Saturday morning may be required. Actors are expected to be at all rehearsals and performances.

PERFORMANCES

There are two Thursday morning performances, where actors perform for the school children who arrive at the theater on busses. An excuse slip is provided to take to teacher. There are two public performances as well, a Friday evening and a Sunday matinee.

COSTS

Thre is no cost or participation fee to perform in ECCT productions. One script is provided for each actor. Costumes are also provided at no cost. ECCT asks for parent participation by helping with a show - handing out programs, helping backstage, helping in the green room, helping with school performances, bringing refreshments for actors for a performance. Volunteer coordinator, Amy Pitak, provides a parent sign up sheet & guide for parents to choose their preferred participation.
