Pacific Chamber Symphony
Lawrence Kohl, Music Director and Conductor
presents two greats: Mozart & Brahms

Mozart Serenade #12 for Winds

Brahms Serenade #2
Special note: this program has NO violins!

The Serenade No. 12 for Winds in C minor, was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1782 or 1783. . The economy of forces gives each player full soloistic opportunities while exploiting the many ways the different instruments can blend and play off of each other. No wonder the joyful brilliance of the work has made it an audience favorite.  The work is sometimes called "Nacht Musique". The serenade is scored for 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns, and 2 bassoons.

Serenade No. 2 in A, Op. 16, represents one of the first efforts by Johannes Brahms to write lengthy orchestral pieces before launching his first symphony. This, his second serenade, was written in 1859 and dedicated to Clara Schumann. It exudes with his love of Clara, by the way he writes so tenderly for the lower stings and winds. It is a fully romantic work combining and going beyond Mozart's writing for winds. It is a fully satisfying work to behold. It is scored for a standard orchestra, but without violins.
